Martin (Marty) Toomajian

Martin Toomajian serves Michigan State University as a Consultant to the Executive Vice President for Administrative Services and as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for Spartan Innovations. In these roles, he advises and supports the EVP in expanding the research footprint of the university and in promoting a culture of high-performance throughout the organization. He also provides business management direction/guidance to startups and businesses within the university portfolio to enable growth.

Prior to joining MSU in 2017, Toomajian was the CEO of Equinox Chemicals, a specialty chemical manufacturing company located in Albany, GA and President at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, OH. As CEO of Equinox, he provided oversight of company operations, business strategy development, key customer relations, and new market penetration. At Battelle, he led Battelle’s Energy, Health, and Environment businesses where he was responsible for P&L, strategy development & execution, sales, and delivery for $250M of revenue. His business included sales and operations in the U.S., India, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Each of these businesses provided commercial and U.S. Government clients with contract research, professional services, product development, and test and evaluation services. Some of the specific areas of expertise within these businesses included: upstream & downstream oil and gas services; alternative fuels and energy management; agribusiness and environmental services; medical device & consumer product development; public health support, and data analytics.

Toomajian has served on, and chaired, multiple company Boards of Directors and continues to serve on several university advisory boards and the U.S. Energy Security Council. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He a has a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University and a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University. He is a licensed professional engineer and holds one U.S. patent.
